When John Muir matriculated as a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1861, he had, like other students of that era, taught at local district schools to make ends meet for his room, board, and tuition. In the winter of 1861-62, he taught at the Lake Harriet School outside of Oregon, Wisconsin. This program will explore how the Lake Harriet School can serve as an "open door" or portal on Muir's thoughts and pedagogy of education more broadly.
Matthew Farrelly, PhD candidate in history and education at the UW-Madison, will share why Muir's Lake Harriet teaching days mark an important moment in his development and make relevant connections to other aspects of Muir's life.
