September Artist Pop-Up: Andrew Mulhearn at Delta Beer Lab

Four years ago, Andrew began painting portraits at the Atwood Atelier. After coming home from SCAD in Savannah, Georgia, he had hoped to meet fellow artists and keep his traditional skills in gouache from getting rusty as he built a business in freelance illustration. His time there eventually blossomed into a new practice in its own right, resulting in the creation of the twenty-four pieces exhibited here at the Delta Beer Lab, as well as many others. For this, he is deeply indebted to the kind guidance and work of Philip Salamone, without whom none of this would have happened.

A portrait is one of the most complex and serious subjects confronted by painters. First, the artist must capture the likeness of the model. Beyond reproducing the exact relationships between the model’s broad facial structure and features, they must also capture the model’s personality. Both, but especially the latter, require a high degree of sensitivity in both the artist’s observation and brushwork. In addition to this, the artist must also capture the lighting, atmosphere, and color of the scene while interpreting the visual information their eyes collect into a compelling visual design. The paintings exhibited here represent Andrew’s strongest efforts in meeting this standard.
