"There are many ways to the recognition of truth, and Burgundy is one of them." - Isak Dinesen
At first, Burgundy can appear complicated. And why shouldn’t it be? As a wine region, it’s origins date back 2,000 years. It has 100 appellations, 562 Premier Crus and 33 Grand Crus. And French inheritance laws have divided its vineyards among thousands of owners of varying competence and experience. Yet Burgundy offers us an opportunity to explore wine and its terroir — the effects of its soil, topography, climate and culture — that can’t be matched by any other region. And the rewards of a journey like ours through Burgundy can’t be matched either.
In the course of this evening, we’ll travel through the history and the vineyards of the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, from north to south and east to west. We’ll taste more than 10 classic Pinot Noirs from 10 exemplary Burgundy estates in 10 legendary Burgundy appellations. We’ll show you how easy and delicious Burgundy can be, and how rewarding and inexpensive Burgundy can be, and why great Burgundy has been sought after for hundreds of years. If you aren’t already in love with Burgundy, by the end of this evening, you will be.
We believe Burgundy is the source of the world’s most exhilarating wines. And it's not just us. Ever since the Medieval Cistercian and Benedictine monks of the region conceived of the wine, Burgundy has had hypnotic powers over people. Even the least secular of us. In late 1367, the great humanist Petrarch wrote a letter to Urban V soon after the Pope had moved the papacy from Avignon back to Rome. Petrarch had heard Urban’s cardinals felt deprived in Italy, and that they wanted Urban to return the papacy to Avignon “because it brings them the wine of Burgundy, which they regard as the fifth of the natural elements [after earth, air, water, and fire] . . . . It has come to be exalted by these people, and placed almost on a level with the nectar of the gods.”
