POSITION SPECIFIC DETAILS:
- Hours: 40 hours/week
- Status: Full Year
- Location: Varied
- Pay: $18.90/hour
SUMMARY:
The Family Advocate:
- Develops a trusting relationship with Early Head Start (EHS) parents as a support and resource person.
- Plans, develops, and implements appropriate prenatal, family and child development curriculum and other activities including parent socialization events and other parent groups that will enhance the parent/child bond and relationship
- Reinforces the crucial role of parents as the primary educator of their children
- Ensures that all special education, health, mental health and nutritional needs of children are met
- Serves as a positive liaison to other community agencies
- Provides assistance and guidance to families
- Assumes a lead role in implementing social service coordination by providing on-going comprehensive support and case management services to assigned families which promote positive family development, self-sufficiency and social competency
- Assumes a lead role in assuring parent involvement through opportunities that foster parent and family growth.
- Applies Head Start Relationship-Based Competencies and Infant Mental Health principles
- Works closely with Home Based Managers, Nurses, Mental Health Consultants and other appropriate individuals for support in maintaining effective and appropriate practices.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum educational requirement of a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Early Childhood, or a related field or in Social Work, Counseling or Nursing, Master’s Degree desired, with experience in the other (non-degree field).
- Bilingual Spanish preferred
- A minimum of three years of experience working with low income, multi-cultural families
- Demonstrated experience and/or skills in family support and guidance including addressing mental health needs, community resource usage, case management and advocacy.
- Community development
- Effective approaches that support family self-sufficiency
- Have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License, motor vehicle and adequate liability insurance as required by agency policy and state liability regulations
